AKRON, Ohio — A man who was shot during a home invasion is recovering after police say they were able to use new technology to track him down when he called 911 but did not say where he was.
According to police, dispatchers received several “incomplete” 911 calls at about 12:20 a.m. Thursday. In one of the calls, the person said “help” but again hung up without giving dispatchers an address or any other information.
Using the technology “Prepared Live,” the dispatchers were able to pinpoint the caller’s location on the 1100 block of Hinman Court in South Akron. When officers arrived, they found a 26-year-old man with gunshot wounds to his upper body.
The victim was taken to Cleveland Clinic Akron General Hospital, where he underwent surgery and is listed in serious but stable condition.
“The combined use of the technology and the initial actions of the responding officers provided the victim with a fighting chance to survive his injuries,” Capt. Michael Miller, the public information officer for Akron police, said in a news release.
Police believe an unknown suspect, possible wearing a mask, forced entry into the home and shot the victim. A motive is unknown.
