LIMA (AP) — Un autobús de pasajeros que viajaba por una carretera de los Andes de Perú se salió de la vía y cayó por una pendiente provocando al menos 20 muertos, informaron el martes las autoridades.
El vehículo de la empresa “La Perla del Altomayo” sufrió el accidente la víspera en una zona del distrito de Cusca , en la provincia de Corongo, indicó la Defensa Civil. El bus terminó destrozado 300 metros más abajo. Carlos Pinedo, alcalde de Yanac, un distrito cercano a Cusca, dijo a la prensa local que la carretera en la zona del siniestro está en “pésimas condiciones”.
Los agentes investigaban los motivos del accidente que al momento eran desconocidos.
La imprudencia de los choferes y el exceso de velocidad son las principales causas de los siniestros viales en Perú, según la fiscalía. La vigilancia del transporte por carretera es débil y el auxilio es tan lento y desorganizado que varios heridos mueren cerca de las vías, según expertos.
En los accidentes carreteros muere usualmente gente pobre. Los expertos han indicado por casi dos décadas que la solución es una reforma integral del transporte, pero ningún gobierno la ha iniciado.

En 2022 hubo 3.311 muertos producto de accidentes de tránsito, según un reporte de la Defensoría del Pueblo peruana.
