‘We keep them safe and alive’: Local homeless shelter preparing for winter weather
Right now, Shelter KC needs help providing enough coats, gloves, hats, and socks to their residents and others in need.
Anytime the temperature drops below freezing, it can be deadly for people trying to survive on the streets. Now, local homeless shelters are preparing for the cold weather and how it affects their work. When the forecast dips below 32 degrees, Shelter KC makes changes to its routine to make sure a warm shelter is available to anyone who needs it. The shelter extends its hours, creates more sleeping arrangements, and provides warm winter clothing to anyone in need. “We just want to be a safe place for these people, but also a place where you can change that direction and a chance to move forward,” Eric Jaekels said. Jaekels is a life coach at Shelter KC. He also does outreach work — helping people get off the street and into the shelter.“Everybody’s got a different reason, a different story or different circumstances,” he said. “I like to see lives change. I like to see hope for the future.”With colder weather coming, he said their work is especially important – saying the extreme temperatures tend to emphasize the needs of the homeless community. “A lot of times, like today, they’ll come in wet and without a change of clothes,” Jaekels said. “We keep them in, and we keep them warm. We keep them safe and alive, most importantly.”Right now, the shelter needs help providing enough coats, gloves, hats, and socks to their residents and others in need. If you want to help, you can bring donations to the shelter at 1520 Cherry Street in Kansas City, MO, or you can make financial donations on their website.
