Regarding speakership: if McCarthy were ABLE and WILLING to think about healing divisions, he certainly has the option to reach across the aisle. I think there is a good chance that wise democrats would be able to formulate a bargain that does a much better job of protecting democracy for all than having continually to kowtow to the 5 most extreme members of his conference.
Regarding tax returns: Trump has multiple bankruptcies. He reported giant losses on businesses with no income. How can the GOP clamor about fiscal responsibility and not want the leader of their party to be a good example. I don't think it's vindictive to want to see the President's tax returns. I think it's basic good sense, and even more so if the chief executive has the power to order an executive branch agency not to follow the law.
PS. The Constitution specifies only limited requirements to be President but I see no reason states could not enact requirements to get on the ballot: example, must release previous 5 years tax returns before the state primary or caucus. If even a few states did that, it would create an expectation of accountability.

What a ludicrous comment to suggest that releasing Trump's tax returns is somehow "antithetical," antithetical to what – good governance; if every preceding president has released their tax returns why should Trump be exempt and why it is vindictive? I'm reminded of the old adage 'if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear;' but Trump continuously lied that his taxes were being audited, when he knew full well they weren't.
