More than 1m people gathered in the French capital Paris, to watch the New Year’s Eve firework display atop the icon Arc de Triomphe. This celebration was the first in Paris since December 2019, where 250,000 people present. This year crowds of people stood along the Champs-Élysées to celebrate the start of 2023, after two years of Covid cancellations. ‘It was almost 2 million people if you take the wider perimeter,’ said the interior minister, Gérald Darmanin.
