New Jersey’s weather trend of ups and downs will be taking a downward slide Saturday night as temperatures drop below the freezing mark, with cold air sticking around for a few days.

But forecasters say a gradual warming trend will return by late next week, as temperatures make a push back into the low 60s on Thursday and Friday.

For now, we’ll need to keep some extra blankets around, with temperatures expected to hover in the low 50s Saturday afternoon, with light gusty winds making it feel colder. The mercury will drop down to about 30 degrees in most interior sections of the state by Sunday morning, with lows hitting the upper 20s in the northwestern region, according to the latest forecast from the National Weather Service.

Sunday is shaping up to be a very cold autumn day, with daytime highs stuck in the 40s in many areas of the Garden State before dropping down to the mid- to upper 20s by Monday morning. That will be 5 to 10 degrees below normal for early November, but far from breaking any records.

Newark would have to drop to 22 degrees to match its record low for Nov. 13, while Atlantic City would have to hit 21 degrees, and Trenton would have to dip to 19 degrees, according to data from the weather service.

Freeze warnings

Even though many areas of New Jersey will experience sub-freezing temperatures the next two mornings, official freeze warnings or frost advisories will not be issued by the National Weather Service, because the growing season is now over.

The growing season came to an end Nov. 2 and Nov. 3, when a hard freeze occurred across most of the Garden State two mornings in a row.

However, if homeowners have any outdoor plants that are still alive, those plants can be protected by being covered or moved indoors the next two nights.

Dry trend continues

Worth noting: Despite the cold temperatures, this weekend will likely shape up as New Jersey’s second straight weekend with no rain — following eight consecutive weekends with measurable rain reported in many areas of the state.

Some of those weekends were total washouts, with rain falling on both Saturday and Sunday, and some had rain on either Saturday or Sunday.
