During the summer of 2021, Microsoft announced that Skype Business would officially be shutting down. At first glance, this seemed like quite a shame given that Microsoft had spent $8.5 billion acquiring the company. Not to mention, all of the effort and time spent on maintaining and improving the platform over the past decade. But, while Skype Business didnβt quite work out, the acquisition of Skype was still a massive success given that Microsoft was able to develop Microsoft Teams based on Skype. While all of the hype for video conferencing centers on Zoom, Teams is actually the real king of video conferencing. In fact, Teams has 270 million active users which is not far behind Zoomβs 300 million. Also, Teamsβ users are likely much more profitable than Zoomβs users given that Microsoft primarily targets employers. Looking forward, it looks like itβs just a matter of time until Teams even overtakes Windows in terms of annual revenue. This video explains the acquisition of Skype and why Skype was likely Microsoftβs best acquisition.

"costed"?
If only they have kept Messenger and incorporate it into the Windows Phone. But there's still a chance. I have the Android Microsoft Launcher which is πππ what if they built a complete Microsoft suite for Android all in one, outlook, launcher, office, Teams, and WL Messenger to compete with WhatsApp all in one. And also a kind of social media for Microsoft accounts available in the Launcher to be a simpler Twitter
microsoft ruins all the software it buys
That sound does give me nightmaresπ
I never understand why the hate to Skype, for me it always was a very good platform, iβm a Mac user and i like to use Facetime but i never had problems with Skype.
I hate you for playing the teams ring tone LOOL
Microsoft Lync –> Microsoft Skype for Business. It wasn't as if Skype for business was a recent invention for Microsoft.
Skype isn't bad now I was just trying it only reason I don't use it is nobody else does
I look back at Skype with nostalgia. Being able to videocall people was the coolest thing ever for me as a kid
Will Activision be the next Skype ? I don't know π Great video again!
I don't think they really shut down Skype business. They just converted it to Teams.
Skype business was just a rebranded MS communicator then Lync. Teams was just an overhauled version of Skype for Business and initially had lacking features from Skype in its first release, and added features since.
Teams aims to destroy WebEx.
The Teams the service is fine. The Teams client on the other hand is a piece of garbage and needs a complete overhaul.
RIP Skype, where the best nudes and hot video calls came from and then the dates to come into.
Your content is incredible! Grad to see you grow so fast! Only thing I would do is invest in a proffessional microphone to 10x the production quality of your videos. Keep up the great work!
Great video- would love to see more business case studies
I still hate Skype. A client (which take decade to ajust) still want to use Skype for meetings. It never work and we have to schedule a paralel meeting on Teams to actually do the meeting.
Teams is so popular and used by so many employers because it comes free with Office 365. Personally, I prefer using Zoom over Teams at my job because I can connect to a Zoom meeting without using my work PC.
Skype still charges $0.01/minute for making international regular phone calls to India & china.
Microsoft has been making very good acquisitions, Linked in and Skype were both pretty good investment.
ive recently reinstalled skype as meta has been bullshitting around and suspended me for 3 days for no feason, its been nostalgic to see some conversations i had like 13yrs ago with friends still as a teen, im keeping it active now if anyone comes back online or meta decides to fuck around again its a great alternative
"Launch of Skype for Business in 2015"??? Bro, what about Skype for Business 2013? Lync 2010? Not to mention its predecessor, Office Communicator 2007… More research would have been better around this topic.
Teams is still awful
Happy New Years bro!! Letβs make this year a strong one!!
