    i've always heard it pronounced 18, 6, 50

  • kenneth on December 6, 2021

    It's weird not hearing 18, 6, 50 , ys this man sayin 1865

The electrons are not traveling from the anode to the cathode…

Veritasium has a whole video on this

I would think they develop merchandise or products to make a prof , but if it’s investors money sometimes they develop toys for them self

I don't get these types of videos, just a compilation of short term history that we've already heard 100x times before.

I'm hesitant to give a thumbs up here. You clearly did a lot of research to understand the batteries which have helped my understanding of the difference of these new and improved batteries. You have one thing wrong in you analogies/explanations. Electrons do not travel more than a few millimeters pr. Second. Instead it's more appropriate to say that push or pertubate the magnetic fields which in this scenario must mean that since there are more exposure the power output increases due to the larger surface area.

Veritasium has a pretty nice explanation of why the classical thinking of electricity is flawed 😊

Nonetheless thank you for your explanation!

Best explanation of tabless I've seen so far

  • Jim Polkowski on December 6, 2021

Very nice video. But will solid-state batteries design only work in pouch design? It will be 10 to 20 years before any ss battery is mass-produced. The durability of the current pouch and cylindrical batteries needs more study to come up with the million-mile battery that will improve how many EVs are on the road. A tax credit for battery replacement would keep more EVs on the road and lower the carbon footprint of disposal of the vehicle. If I knew that a replacement battery after 200,000 was cheap I would keep the car for another 200,000 miles.

Some say GM will go banckrup in ten years. I think it will be a lot sooner. To compete in EV's you need new plants exclusively for manufacturing EV's, something GM does not have the expertise or knowledge. Capital will be too low to make such a large investment. They have the UAW that will fight for the ICE plants vs the EV plant if they made one. There is no way a company can handle EV and making ICE cars at the time passes. The difference is huge. Tesla manufactures 5 cars in the same time an ICE manufacturers produces one. There are two main manufacturer of EV's in the world, One is Tesla and the other is from China. In less than five years the will buy all the emergent EV's manufacturer's. Due to the technologyinvolved thee is no place for miriads of EV's companies. It will be like Beta vs VHS (one won; not the bes) or #D for tv passive vs active (no one wins), but there has to be electric EV manufacturers.

Wrong, Tesla plaid is not fastest world production car. It has best acceleration in the whole world for production car.

  • KyleQuest on December 6, 2021

Just FYI, BYD's LFP blade batteries have already crushed Tesla's 4680.
Most importantly, they aren't extreme fire bombs waiting to ignite.

I really enjoyed this. Thanks for doing a deep dive that felt like a real analysis of this without going too deep, ya know? It was really a pleasure to watch this. I feel enlightened.

  • DSSlocksmiths on December 6, 2021

It literally has 18650 written on the side of all those "Eighteen 6 50" batteries. SMDH.

Is the BYD Blade a better development?

  • IloveBlender on December 7, 2021

So in theory solid state is better, but until they figure out how to do it tesla will have produced and sold a ridiculous amount of cars?

  • Yaser Farid on December 7, 2021

Have you seen how current flow video by https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHIhgxav9LY

    Current doesn't flow like that.

  • StuffAndyMakes on December 7, 2021

Isn’t a cathode usually the negative side? A cathode ray tube fires a ray of electrons [negative charge] off the cathode at the back of the tube, which is attracted to the positive screen at the front of the tube, which illuminates the phosphor to make pixels glow. Anodes are positive.

  • Peter Yianilos on December 7, 2021

I will be very happy when we all accept that a passenger vehicle doesn’t need to out-accelerate a $4mln Bugatti. 6.5s 0-60, for example, would be a world changer.

  • Peter Yianilos on December 7, 2021

A battery pack as a stressed chassis element would make battery replacement virtually impossible, no?

  • Fade Music on December 7, 2021

I hope we get a battery like this in an 18650 form factor

  • Reed Melicher on December 7, 2021

Except without the right to repair, a minor issue can total your vehicle. Or cost $10,000 when the part should cost $10. It's just not worth the risk. Tesla sells you a car that seems normal but then can hold you hostage when something inevitably breaks.

  • Jonathan Balloch on December 7, 2021

    18650* not 1865

  • khushal ahmad on December 7, 2021

    It's all a sham.

  • A C on December 7, 2021

Electricity isn't a flow of Electrons. It's an electromagnetic wave traveling over the surface of a conductor.

  • cedmanotro on December 7, 2021

A structural battery pack also means it'll much be harder to replace it once it inevitably degrades and is no longer usable. Meaning it'd be a throwaway kind of thing, use the car for a couple years, scrap it. Good job for the environment

  • wrefk on December 7, 2021

A major improvement the 4680 brings that seems overlooked and ignored way too often is the change from using graphite to silicon for the anode. This is huge, it drastically reduced material cost, improve energy density and longevity of the cell itself

  • A Hale on December 8, 2021

Tesla will most probably buy the company that comes to market with a viable solid state battery. Untill then others are waiting for it and Tesla is moving forward with the battery technology that's available!

  • RSGTomcat on December 8, 2021

According to a breakthrough development at Texas A&M university with solid state batteries, one of the single biggest improvements that tech will bring is exponentially improved recharge endurance and greatly reduced energy capacity loss over time. To illustrate, If today's cells can recharge a total of 100,000 hours before wearing out, then a solid state battery could recharge 1,000,000,000 hours (numbers made up to illustrate the point).

  • Guillaume Paré on December 8, 2021

You sure about the shape that hsan,t been made before?

  • AH AH on December 9, 2021

I hate cylindrical cells, .thank god theres square ones with bolt terminals…

  • Inviticus on December 9, 2021

I have never heard the 18650 being referred to as the 1865, which is wrong all together. If your going to make a video about being accurate because of misinformation don't start off by shitting all over the most popular li-ion battery size.

  • Learn Progress on December 9, 2021

What about the blade or solid , blade doesn’t get hot so I’m told

  • king James on December 9, 2021

I wish Elon would reach out, I know how to solve the solid state conversion to liquid. I would love to simply give it to them if I can name it.

  • Kelvin Parker on December 9, 2021

You’re so wrong… comment back if you care to be enlightened. Tabless only changes the resistance and keeps heat down. It doesn’t matter how far the electrons have to travel.

  • MD M on December 9, 2021

Does teslla patent the 4680? I'm wondering are other companies allowed to make them?

  • Markus B on December 9, 2021

2:23 "…Including the Plaid Edition which is the fastest accelerating production car in the world."

  • JIGWIGPIGGY on December 10, 2021

    Those batteries are sexy.

  • Val Martin - Real True Education on December 10, 2021

Electric cars are a complete failure in Ireland. When the heater, lights and wipers are on these very dark and cold evenings, they stop half way home. Buyers are demanding their money back from garages.
