Start by installing and activating the Stop Spammer Registrations plugin.

This will add a item under Settings called Stop Spammers.

Go there to configure, you’ll see your UP and user have automatically been white listed so you don’t get locked out.

The plugin uses multiple anit-spam techniques and checks IP addresses from the stop forums spam’s database.
